Russian scientists have completed an expedition to assess the stocks of small pelagic fish off the coast of Africa

On December 12, 2022, the research vessel STM ATLANTNIRO returned to Kaliningrad after performing an international expedition off the coast of the Kingdom of Morocco.

A comprehensive survey to assess the replenishment of small pelagic fish in the area of the Atlantic fishing zone of Morocco was carried out within the framework of the Agreement between the Government of the Russian Federation and the Government of the Kingdom of Morocco on Cooperation in the field of marine Fisheries.

The replenishment survey was carried out in the period from October to November.

The goal set for the expedition – to obtain indices of replenishment of populations of small pelagic fish (European sardine, Eastern mackerel, European and West African horse mackerel) and assessment of environmental conditions was achieved.

The scientific group this year included 11 Russian specialists, as well as 2 scientists from the National Institute of Fisheries Research of Morocco. The joint work of Russian and Moroccan specialists at sea was carried out in a warm and friendly atmosphere, showing the coordinated work of scientists at all stages of the survey.

The final survey results, including the values of the indices of replenishment of small pelagic fish, will be obtained after processing all the data in the relevant departments.

The results of the expedition will be used in the upcoming Russian-Moroccan negotiations. The next meeting of experts from Russia and Morocco on the analysis of the results of joint research is scheduled for January 2023. During this meeting, it is planned to discuss, first of all, the results of the survey on the assessment of the replenishment of small pelagic fish, carried out in October-November 2022 in the area of Morocco. The agenda of the meeting also includes a number of other issues in the areas of joint Russian-Moroccan research.
