Scientific support for artificial reproduction of the Azov beluga

The season of releasing young sturgeon into water bodies of fishery importance has begun in the Azov-Black Sea fishery basin. From June 3 to June 5 of this year, the Don Sturgeon Plant of the Federal State Budgetary Institution "Glavrybvod" held events to release young beluga into the Don River as part of the artificial reproduction of this particularly valuable species.

During the entire process of artificial reproduction, including the selection of producers, obtaining sexual products, fertilization of eggs, their incubation, growing of larvae and juveniles, employees of the Aquaculture Center of the Azov-Black Sea branch of the State Research Center of the Russian Federation "All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography" (VNIRO) collected primary data, carefully analyzed them and promptly provided the fish farm with recommendations on optimizing the technological process.

In order to avoid the risks of inbreeding and, as a result, obtaining non-viable offspring, specialists from the genetic research laboratory of the Azov-Black Sea branch of VNIRO carried out careful work on the preliminary development of optimal crossing pairs based on the genetic characteristics of the producers. In the reproduction process, parental pairs of beluga were used, which will produce the most genetically diverse and viable offspring. The young beluga released into the natural environment will have a high adaptive potential for life in natural conditions.

Long-term comprehensive work on scientific support of fish farms makes it possible to significantly increase the effectiveness of measures for the artificial reproduction of aquatic biological resources for the purpose of their conservation and future rational economic use.
