Scientists are studying the conditions of fish reproduction at the spawning grounds of the Volga

In the period from May 24 to June 5, scientists from the All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO) conducted research to study the natural reproduction of semi-anadromous and river fish species in the fields of the eastern part of the Volga delta.

Research on the m/v "Raskat" was carried out on spawning areas in the eastern part of the delta and in the waters of the Vasilievsky and Belinsky banks, including the kultuchny zone.

During the research cruise, the approach and spawning of portion-spawning spawners of carp, crucian carp, and rudd in the spawning grounds of the lower zone of the eastern part of the delta was noted. The captured fish larvae in all surveyed fields were located en masse at shallow depths (from 25 to 50 cm) in areas with green meadow and aquatic vegetation, reaching a maximum density of several thousand larvae per square meter.

Scientists will determine the success of natural reproduction of semi-anadromous and aquatic fish species after processing the collected samples and conducting a survey of juvenile fish in June using a fry drag net.

Indicators for taking into account the efficiency of natural reproduction and the qualitative composition of juvenile semi-anadromous and river fish, as well as an analysis of the ecological conditions of the habitat of aquatic organisms and the hydrobiological situation in the fields and water bodies of the river delta. Volga will make it possible to give recommendations on fishery reclamation of spawning grounds, and will also be included in the calculations of stocks, TAC and recommended catch of semi-anadromous and river fish in the Southern fishery region of the Volga-Caspian fishery basin.
