Joint Research Program of the Russian Federal Agency for Fishery and the Russian Academy of Science

A meeting of the leadership of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Federal Agency for Fishery was held in Moscow on March 1. The meeting was dedicated to the summing up the results of last year`s cooperation and signing a program of joint scientific research for 2021.

The event was attended by the President of the Russian Academy of Sciences Alexander Sergeev, the head of the Federal Agency for Fishery Ilya Shestakov, the Vice-President of the Russian Academy of Sciences Andrey Adrianov, the Director of the All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography Kirill Kolonchin and scientists of the Institute.

Already in the first two years of cooperation under the 2018 Agreement, unique scientific research has been carried out, and the results of the accomplished work have been brought to the general scientific community and published in leading scientific journals.

"But we intend to go further - to the joint development  of groundbreaking technologies and researches»,- Ilya Shestakov, the head of Rosrybolovstvo, noted in his opening speech. At the moment, through the common efforts VNIRO and Institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences are creating a world-class Scientific Center, researches of which will provide access to high-tech development of the World Ocean`s most promising bioresources.

Alexander Sergeev, President of the Russian Academy of Sciences, stressed that 2021 has been declared the Year of Science and Technology by Russian President Vladimir Putin, and expressed confidence that the joint research program will be successful and bring worthy results in the development of ecosystem and fisheries research.

According to Kirill Kolonchin, director of VNIRO, who presented the new program, the attention of scientists in 2021 will focus on studying the ecosystems of the Southern Ocean and the seas of the Siberian Arctic, studying the biocenosis of underwater uplifts of the northern Pacific Ocean, as well as the ecosystems and bioresources of the Black and Azov Seas. In addition, research in the field of ecology and fisheries of the Volga River and Lake Baikal, research of marine mammals in Russian waters, assessment of global climate changes and the dynamics of the most important commercial stocks will be no less relevant for science.

The result of the joint meeting was the signing of the research program for 2021. The document was signed by the President of the Russian Academy of Sciences Alexander Sergeev and the head of Rosrybolovstvo Ilya Shestakov.

For active participation in the development of cooperation in the field of ecosystem and fisheries research of the World Ocean, Academician, President of the Russian Academy of Sciences Alexander Sergeev and Academician, Vice-President of the Russian Academy of Sciences Andrey Adrianov were awarded the medals" For Merits in the Development of the Russian Fisheries " of the II degree.

According to the participants, the year 2021 promises to be productive in all its manifestations-both in the field of specific research works and in the field of scientific communication. This year, the All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography celebrates its 140th anniversary. The beginning of fisheries science was laid by the foundation of the Solovetsky Biostation on the White Sea in 1881. The leadership of the Russian Academy of Sciences supported the idea of holding a scientific conference dedicated to this historic event and agreed to join the organizing committee.
