Scientists from the Magadan branch of VNIRO have begun annual monitoring of the fishery and biological state of coastal pollock and Pacific herring in the northern part of the Sea of Okhotsk

Philip Burlak, an employee of the Magadan branch of the All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO), was sent to monitor the industrial fishing of coastal pollock and Pacific herring in the northern part of the Sea of Okhotsk.

The work is being carried out from the RMRS Sea Hunter (OOO Tikhrybkom), equipped with a mid-water trawl. From August to October of this year, a long-term series of observations and scientific support for the fishing of priority objects will be continued within the North Okhotsk subzone.

The expeditionary research will collect information on the biology and spatial distribution of common commercial fish species. Particular attention will be paid to by-catch objects of commercial fish species, the study of which in the northern part of the Sea of Okhotsk is possible only with the support of fishing organizations.

The obtained materials will be used to prepare forecasts of total permissible catches of pollock and Pacific herring in the North-Okhotsk subzone, as well as in the development of recommendations for the rational exploitation of their stocks.
