Spawning migration of whitefish in Yamal under scientific control

Specialists from the Tyumen branch of the Russian State Research Center of Fisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO) continue to study the spawning run of the whitefish (shchokur) in the lower reaches of the Ob River in the Priuralsky District of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug.

Scientists carry out mass measurements and biological analysis of commercial fish, assess the size and age structure of individuals: age, length, weight, sex, fat content coefficient and readiness of fish for spawning. Ichthyological studies are conducted from commercial catches.

In addition, fisheries scientists study the distribution, abundance and reproduction conditions of the spawning stock. After processing all the materials, scientists will determine the relative size of the stock.

Specialists will also assess the ecological conditions of the fish habitat, for this purpose, water and soil samples were collected.

The whitefish in the Ob River basin is a valuable and important commercial fishery object, especially in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. In the long-term aspect, the stocks of whitefish are declining, so it is under the close attention of scientists. The whitefish comes to spawn later than other whitefish: in October-November, when the water bodies begin to cover with ice.

Data on the spawning migration of whitefish is collected as part of state monitoring. The research results will be of great importance for fisheries and will form the basis for recommendations for the permissible catch for 2026.
