Specialists from the Azov-Black Sea branch of VNIRO monitor the activities of enterprises for the artificial reproduction of aquatic biological resources

The Azov-Black Sea branch of the Russian State Research Center “All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography” (VNIRO) regularly monitors the work of reproduction enterprises in the Azov basin. All stages are closely monitored: from obtaining caviar to releasing juveniles into rivers.

To assess the fish-breeding potential of producers kept in factories under controlled conditions, caviar samples are taken. These studies help determine fertility, the level of fertilization of caviar and the release of one-day larvae.

In addition, laboratory specialists monitor the conditions for growing juveniles, which affects their quality and survival. When growing in ponds, samples are regularly taken for hydrobiological studies in order to assess food availability. Observations of the growth rate and nutritional status of juveniles are also important.

As of September 30 of this year, enterprises of the Azov basin grew and released 14.5 million sturgeon individuals, including 6.8 million Russian sturgeon individuals. The volume of Russian sturgeon released this year is 300 thousand specimens more than for the same period in 2023.

Research conducted by the laboratory showed that the released fish met the established standards for weight, and the protein and lipid content in their muscles was at a satisfactory level. This allows us to predict their survival at the established level.

Today, artificial reproduction of aquatic bioresources, especially sturgeon, is the main way to replenish their numbers. VNIRO specialists pay great attention to the activities of fish farms and the search for solutions to improve the quality of the products obtained.
