Speleo-underwater expedition

From January 4 to 8, specialists from the Ural branch of the Russian State Research Center “All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography” (VNIRO) took part in a speleo-underwater expedition to the caves of the Northern Urals.

The expedition was attended by 12 speleologists from Yekaterinburg and Revda. The divers explored the largest underground lake in the Urals, located in the Tayezhnaya cave. The area of the reservoir is 7,000 m2, the depth reaches 46 m.

During the expedition, photo and video filming of the unique water body was carried out, living organisms were identified - two species of gammarids, burbots and algae living at a depth of more than 20 m in absolute darkness.

Samples of gammarus were collected for their study at the Ural branch of VNIRO. In the future, it is planned to collect samples of algae to determine the taxonomic composition.
