Tatar branch of VNIRO continues research into winter recreational fishing

In the winter of 2025, specialists from the Tatar branch of the Russian State Research Center “All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography” (VNIRO) continue to study the characteristics of amateur fishing on the Kuibyshev Reservoir within the water area of the Republic of Tatarstan as part of the state assignment on the topic: “Assessment of anthropogenic impact on aquatic biological resources and their habitat (including collecting information on the number of amateur fishermen and their catches, as well as illegal fishing).

During the trips, the branch employees carry out a route count of amateur fishermen, with their consent, determine the species and size composition of the caught fish, and assess the number and areas of fishermen's concentrations in the reservoir.

During the route counts, about two hundred people were interviewed. Seven cards were compiled to record the number of fishermen. The main fishing gear for amateur fishermen in the coastal area is a rod equipped with a jig, where bloodworms are used as bait. In open reaches, fishing is done with all sorts of spoons with tulka. It is noted that recently, amateur fishermen have shown an increased interest in live bait gear (zherlitsy).

A clear division is noted among the fish caught - in the coastal area, in shallow areas, white bream, bleak, roach, ruff and perch predominate, in channel and near-channel areas, pike perch and zander are mainly noted as prey.
