The Magadan branch of VNIRO has organized monitoring of industrial catches of gastropods (trumpeters) in the northern part of the Sea of Okhotsk

In May, industrial fishing of gastropods (whelks) traditionally begins in the north of the Sea of Okhotsk, since the most productive whelk fishing area in the waters of the Russian Far East is located here.

The Magadan whelk is a valuable food commercial resource and a well-known brand in our country, as well as in international markets. The development of quotas for the fishery of this object has been at a consistently high level in recent years.

Employees of the Magadan branch of the State Research Center of the Russian Federation "All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography" (VNIRO), in association with mining companies of the Magadan Region, have been monitoring the whelk resource fishery in the Pritauysky district almost annually for more than 30 years.

In April 2025, Yulia Shcherbakova, an experienced hydrobiologist, head of the invertebrate laboratory of the Magadan branch of VNIRO, began monitoring the whelk fishery. The research is being carried out from the specialized fishing vessel SRTM "Alexander Shalin". The collected materials are planned to be used to update the assessment of gastropod stocks and prepare forecasts of the TAC of whelks for subsequent years. In addition, these data will serve as the basis for developing recommendations for the rational exploitation of gastropod stocks.

"The primary goal of monitoring the whelk fishery this year will be to study the possibilities of expanding the fishing area by continuing search work for deep-sea whelk species, detecting and involving them in industrial circulation. In addition, during the work on the vessel, it is planned to practice the biotechnology of transporting whelks alive," said the head of the Magadan branch of VNIRO Evgeny Metelev.
