The first edition was published in 2006 in two volumes, it was recognized as one of the best in Russia. In accordance with the Order of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation dated May 23, 2016 No. 306 "On approval of the Procedure for maintaining the Red Book of the Russian Federation", regional red books are reprinted every ten years. Currently, active work is underway to prepare the third edition, which is planned to be released in 2027.
In addition to representatives of the Committee for Natural Resources, Forestry and Ecology of the Volgograd Region, specialists from natural parks, employees of research institutes, associate professors from various departments of higher educational institutions, the commission also includes three employees of the Middle Volga branch of the Russian State Research Center “All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography” (VNIRO), specializing in ichthyofauna and aquatic invertebrates.
The working meeting discussed the routes of expedition trips of the commission members in 2025 in order to establish the current distribution of protected species, as well as proposals for updating the List of animal species, both listed in the Red Book of the Volgograd Region and those that are objects of special attention and monitoring in the region.
