The Northern Branch of VNIRO hosted the first stage of the amateur fishing competition “Fishing by Science”

On April 10, 2024, the 1st stage of the amateur fishing competition of the Northern Branch of the All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO) “FISHERING BY SCIENCE” took place.
 
The competition took place on the lake. Kholmovskoye (Arkhangelsk region, Primorsky district). The fishing area was fenced with flags, the distance between the holes was at least 5 m, each fisherman used no more than 1 fishing rod, and the fishing lasted for three hours. The competition was attended by 9 branch employees, both with extensive fishing experience and beginners, representatives of scientific laboratories, administration, and logistics departments. Fishing gear – winter fishing rods with jigs, bait: bloodworms and maggots. The catches included perch and ruff.
 
A fierce struggle for championship ensued between three experienced fishermen. As a result, Roman Melnik, a specialist from the Coastal Research Laboratory, won with a catch weight of 358 g, ahead of his closest rival, senior specialist of the LPI Vladimir Sherstkov, by 34 g, and the number of fish caught in 1st and 2nd places was the same. Third place was taken by LPI senior researcher Gennady Fuks with a catch weight of 221. The winners were awarded certificates and memorable prizes, and all competition participants were awarded certificates for participation.
