The Republic of Buryatia has strengthened control over the spawning migration of the Baikal endemic

On September 20, a visiting working meeting of the operational headquarters for the organization of the protection of the Baikal omul during the spawning period was held. The meeting was chaired by Deputy Chairman of the Government of the Republic of Buryatia - Minister of Agriculture and Food Galsan Dareev.

Acting head of the Baikal branch of the Russian State Research Center "All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography" (VNIRO) Sergey Kushnarev presented a report on the dynamics of the advancement of spawning stocks of the Baikal omul in 2024.

It was noted that the number of omul generations that were born after the ban is quite high. But, unfortunately, today they have not yet entered into reproduction, since omul reaches sexual maturity only at 6-7 years. That is why the number of producers is low this year - the small generation of 2015-2017 is spawning. VNIRO scientists predict that the number of spawning stocks will begin to increase next year.
