The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture – 2024

The 2024 International Fishery Forum hosted the presentation of the FAO flagship report The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture 2024 (SOFIA) and the results of the 36th session of the FAO Committee on Fisheries (COFI), where the speaker was, among others, the Director of the Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO), Doctor of Economics Kirill Kolonchin.

The FAO flagship report The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture (SOFIA), published every two years, is designed for government officials, scientists, fishermen and fish farmers, representatives of the fishing industry and retail chains, civil society and consumers. It provides up-to-date information, factual data, scientific views on challenges and opportunities, as well as practical recommendations on innovative solutions that affect the current situation in the sector and its future.

“Our round table has already become traditional. It is gratifying that we have been cooperating with FAO for a very long time, that we are partners. We exchange data and information on a daily basis. It is very valuable that FAO publishes such a report, which is of great interest to specialists not only at VNIRO, but in principle to the entire industry. The material, in my opinion, contains not just statistical information, but a deep analysis of fisheries and aquaculture issues,” noted Kirill Kolonchin.

The key provisions of the flagship report “The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture – 2024”, the main theme of which is “The Blue Transformation in Action”, are presented at the round table, with special attention paid to approaches and recommendations related to solving urgent problems in the field of aquatic food systems.

Promoting sustainable aquaculture development in order to meet the growing demand for food products from aquatic bioresources; ensuring effective governance of the fisheries sector to improve the health of fish stocks and form equitable sources of livelihood; modernization of production and distribution chains of food products from aquatic bioresources in such a way as to guarantee their social, economic and environmental sustainability are the basis of the FAO Blue Transformation concept.
