The study of river and semi-anadromous fish continues in the Volga Delta

In July of this year, specialists from the Volga-Caspian branch of the Russian State Research Center “All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography” (VNIRO) conducted control catches to study the feeding grounds and distribution of producers of semi-anadromous and river fish in the rolling part of the western watercourses of the Volga Delta.

The Gandurinsky and Kirovsky banks are located to the east of the main channel of the Volga – the Volga-Caspian Sea Shipping Canal and the Old Volga, on the banks of which there are fishing and fish-breeding areas, as well as a large number of tourist recreation centers. The work was carried out on the motor vessel “Raskat” as part of the state monitoring of aquatic bioresources.

The material was collected to assess the concentrations and biological characteristics of semi-anadromous and river fish. The catches consisted of 12 types of aquatic bioresources, among which carp and catfish dominated in weight, crucian carp and white bream catches were also at a high level, mass measurements and weighing of more than 200 fish specimens were carried out.

During the voyage, the degree of waterlogging of water bodies and overgrowing of biotopes in the conditions of a drop in the level of the Caspian Sea were assessed, and hydrological indicators were measured.

Along the route of the vessel, a route count of amateur fishermen on the banks of water bodies and on small-sized floating craft was also carried out.

The results of the research voyage will be used in preparing a stock forecast, calculating total allowable catches and recommended catches of semi-anadromous and river fish, and will also allow for recommendations in the field of fisheries regulation and fisheries melioration of water bodies.
