The Volga-Caspian branch of VNIRO went on a proper fishing trip

In order to popularize responsible recreational fishing and demonstrate the recreational potential of recreational fishing, the All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO) on a nationwide scale in 2024 is holding the “Fishing in Science” Championship for recreational fishing among the branches of the institute.

The first regional stage for the Volga-Caspian branch took place on April 23 on the Kizan River.

Now it is the “hot season” in the Astrakhan region. The most beloved and popular fish - roach - went into the rivers. In the period allowed in 2024 from April 20 to April 30, there is an incredible influx of tourists from all regions of Russia. It took the branch staff three days to find a suitable shore for the competition stage. The choice of location during this period is also complicated by the fact that with the arrival of spring floods, the water level increases to a quarter of a meter per day.

The competitions were held in full compliance with the Fishing Rules for the Volga-Caspian Fishery Basin. Fishing gear with a total number of hooks of no more than five was used. All fish of non-commercial size were immediately returned to their natural habitat and were not counted.

23 branch employees took part in the fishing, among whom 10 female employees competed for victory along with their male colleagues. The results of the competition were assessed by a competent panel of judges. The participants were supported by a large number of fans.

The fishing competition lasted 2 hours; upon completion, each participant had his catch counted and weighed. As a result of the competition, Nikita Kalashnikov, a specialist in the laboratory of semi-anadromous and river fish, became the winner; his catch amounted to 15 fish of commercial size with a total weight of 1.4 kg. The second and third places were taken by Sergey Nikiforov from the laboratory of semi-anadromous and river fish and Andrey Zhatkin from the department of scientific and technical information. And the largest fish was caught by a participant who went fishing for the first time in her life - Yulia Gerlova from the department of standardization and regulation. The weight of the bream was 0.5 kg.

A competent and rational approach to the favorite pastime of many Astrakhan residents, demonstrated by industry experts, should be the key to the further prosperity of our fishing region.
