Towards new knowledge: the start of the Trans-European expedition of NIS "Proteus" has been given

On August 30, a scientific research vessel of the marine class "Proteus" departed from the port of Murmansk in a solemn atmosphere. VNIRO scientists will have to overcome 5 thousand km along the inland waterways of Russia and carry out comprehensive monitoring of the seas and inland waters of the European part of Russia.

The geography of resource research will cover three fisheries basins: the Northern, Volga-Caspian and Azov-Black Sea. Along the entire route of the vessel, scientists from ten branches and the VNIRO central office will analyze surface waters, take samples to assess the state of aquatic biological resources and study the functioning of unique aquatic ecosystems. Comprehensive monitoring studies of the Volga River basin are of particular scientific significance – no similar studies have been conducted in this area before.

The upcoming expedition is also fundamentally important in the context of strengthening the research fleet of the industry. Upon arrival of the NIS "Proteus" in the port of Kerch, the vessel that has undergone technical modernization will be included in the scientific fleet of the Azov-Black Sea branch of VNIRO, which will contribute to the effective solution of the tasks of rational exploitation and conservation of aquatic biological resources of the Black and Azov Seas.

The large-scale Trans-European expedition of NIS "Proteus" will serve as a school for young specialists of branch science who will be part of the scientific crew, and will become a platform for testing new methodologies and innovations in the field of fisheries research.

The results of detailed analytical processing of the data collected during the expedition will enrich the scientific fund of industry science, create prospects for the intensification of fisheries activities and open up opportunities for solving urgent environmental problems.

News reports on the progress of the work of fisheries scientists will be published on the VNIRO website.
