Trans-European crossing of NIS "Proteus": the Volga stage of the expedition has been completed

On September 29, the research vessel "Proteus" arrived in Volgograd. The crew and scientific team of the vessel have more than 4.3 thousand kilometers on the Barents and White Seas, as well as on the inland waterways of the European part of Russia.

Since the launch of the unprecedented scientific expedition on August 30, 2022, eight scientific groups of various branches of the All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO) have been replaced on board the vessel. Scientists have collected a significant amount of data for further study and analysis.

During the expedition, a comprehensive monitoring of the ecosystems of the Barents and White Seas, water bodies of the White Sea-Baltic Canal, Lake Onega, and the Volga River basin was carried out.

NIS "Proteus" still has about 1.5 thousand kilometers of transit ahead on the way to Kerch. At the final stage of the expedition, monitoring work will be localized in the area of the lower reaches of the Don River, where scientists will perform a wide range of hydrobiological and ichthyological studies, as well as a series of hydrometeorological, hydrochemical and ecological-toxicological observations. Similar studies will cover the waters of the Sea of Azov and the Taganrog Bay.

After the completion of the Trans-European Transition, NIS Proteus will remain in Kerch and will carry out scientific work in the basin of the Azov and Black Seas. Strengthening the VNIRO research fleet with a marine-class vessel will allow scientists to unlock the resource potential of the Azov-Black Sea basin with maximum efficiency for the Russian fisheries complex.
