Tyumen branch of VNIRO at the International Water Forum

A large-scale industry event, the International Water Forum, was held in Khanty-Mansiysk. Employees of the Khanty-Mansiysk department of the Tyumen branch of the Russian State Research Center of Fisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO) took part in it.

The key event of the forum was the scientific and practical conference "Water and environmental problems of the Ob-Irtysh basin: new challenges, advanced solutions" with the participation of specialists from Kazakhstan and China.

Leading researcher of the Tyumen branch of VNIRO, candidate of biological sciences Anna Evseeva told the participants about current approaches to assessing the ecological state of water resources using bioindication methods in the context of transboundary water use.

The author presented the results of testing, adaptation and implementation of part of the principles of the Water Framework Directive to the watercourses of the transboundary Irtysh basin (its upper reaches). As a result of twenty years of research on bottom invertebrates of rivers flowing in reference areas, a model of the biocenosis of the "reference" section for medium and small rivers of the upper Irtysh basin was created, and methodological recommendations for the development of reference sections were prepared. "It is necessary to develop approaches to biological diagnostics of aquatic ecosystems and water quality in the transboundary Irtysh basin. It is important to resume hydrobiological monitoring in its sections and in large tributaries on the Russian part," Anna Evseeva is sure.

Over several days of a busy business program, the forum participants discussed the ecological state of water bodies in the Ob-Irtysh basin, the functioning of its ecosystems in the context of climate change, monitoring of water bodies and the quality of water resources, forecasting natural and man-made risks in water bodies. An important practical result was the jointly developed solutions and recommendations for the conservation and development of the Ob-Irtysh basin.

The International Water Forum was held within the framework of the national project "Ecology" and became the final event of the XXI International Ecological Action "Save and Preserve".
