Tyumen branch of VNIRO completed the season of research of commercial invertebrates of Western Siberia

The employees of the laboratory of commercial invertebrates of the Tyumen branch of the State Research Center of the Russian Federation "All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography" (VNIRO) conducted the final research this year in the reservoirs of the south of the Tyumen region. The two-week expedition covered seven lakes of the Tyumen and Nizhnetavdinsky districts.

The focus of the scientists is crayfish. The raw material base of the lakes Andreevsky, Gryaznoye, Butorlyg, Lipovoye, Krugloye, Yantykovo and Kuchakovo was studied. "We measure the caught crayfish: we look at their weight and commercial length, and also determine the sex. When calculating the recommended catch, only commercial specimens that exceed 10 centimeters in length are taken into account. The rest are measured and released into the reservoir for growing. “We enter all the data into the fishing log,” says Evgeny Brazhnikov, a leading specialist at the laboratory of commercial invertebrates at the Tyumen branch of VNIRO.

The comprehensive study also included the collection of hydrobiological and hydrochemical samples, and the study of abiotic parameters of the environment – measuring temperature, mineralization, transparency, water pH, dissolved oxygen content in water, and depth. The work was carried out as part of state monitoring. “The collected data will later be used to calculate the recommended catch volume, which will allow fishing without harming the crayfish population,” says Kirill Kutsanov, head of the laboratory of commercial invertebrates at the Tyumen branch of VNIRO.

The collected material has been delivered to the laboratory, and the results of its office processing will allow us to assess the crayfish stock and assess their condition in the West Siberian fishery basin in 2024.
