On April 2, the central institute of the Russian State Research Center of Fisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO) held negotiations in a video conference mode between scientists from VNIRO and the Chilean Institute for Fisheries Development. Specialists from the Federal Agency for Fisheries and the Ministry of Agriculture of Russia also took part in the negotiations.
The parties discussed promising areas of cooperation, among which the most important are joint studies of the state of horse mackerel stocks in the southern part of the Pacific Ocean.
The leadership of the Chilean institute also proposed the following topics as possible areas of cooperation:
- comprehensive assessment of fishery resources;
- assessment of the biomass and abundance of pelagic species using hydroacoustics;
- study of the dynamics of macroalgae development;
- study of the dynamics of horse mackerel and giant squid populations;
- genetics and molecular biology (vaccines);
- technological developments.
Following the negotiations, the parties agreed to prepare a draft memorandum of cooperation for signing and continue work on the implementation of promising areas of cooperation.
