VNIRO employees are assessing the power of Pacific salmon approaches to spawning rivers in the Sakhalin Region using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)

As part of scientific support for the salmon run in July 2024, employees of the Sakhalin branch of the All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO) began surveying spawning streams and counting the number of salmon producers using photo and video recording from a UAV in the southern part of Sakhalin Island. The work is simultaneously accompanied by walking tours and assessment of thermal conditions.

From 15.07.2024 to 20.07.2024, the branch employees conducted a survey of 16 watercourses at a distance of 1 to 5 km (Zhukovka River, Voznesenka River, Dolinka River, Ochepukha River, Firsovka River, Lazovaya River, Lesnaya River, Makarovka River, Manuy River, Taranai River, Uryum River, Kureika River, Gornaya River, Kedrovka River, Pinda River, Gremuchka River).

The research results are aimed at improving the information support for scientific support of the salmon fishing season, and the data obtained will be used for operational regulation of the fishery and timely decision-making by the Commission for the Regulation of the Extraction (Catch) of Anadromous Fish Species in the Sakhalin Region.
