The Council was attended by representatives of international organizations-FAO (Italy), WorldFish (Malaysia), SEAFDEC (Philippines), NAFO (Canada), IOC/IODE (Belgium), as well as permanent members of the ASFA Advisory Council from participating countries-Argentina, Benin, Great Britain, Vietnam, India, Iran, Ireland, Iceland, Italy, Canada, Kenya, Malaysia, Morocco, Mexico, Nigeria, Poland, Russia, Senegal, USA, Tunisia, Turkey, Uganda, Uruguay, Philippines, Croatia, Chile, Ecuador. Representatives of ASFA regional centers organized on the basis of institutes and universities within the participating countries were also invited to the conference.
The conference was devoted to the discussion of strategies for the development of the ASFA database as the main information system for water sciences and fisheries. Ekaterina Kulakova, the head of the Russian Branch of ASFA, acted as a representative of VNIRO, which has been the National Partner of ASFA in the Russian Federation since 1972.
She told the participants of the meeting about the work of the institute, the number of abstracts provided to the database, the procedure for selecting scientific literature for preparing abstracts in accordance with the FAO programs. The Russian branch of ASFA under the auspices of VNIRO includes 12 collaborating centers and 8 associate members.
During the reporting period, the scientists of the Institute prepared and sent to the ProQuest publishing house and the FAO more than 580 records issued according to specialized FAO programs and containing information from leading scientific journals.
In addition, VNIRO specialists are part of the Working Group on Monitoring and Filling the multilingual agricultural dictionary of agricultural products with taxonomic and subject descriptors. Currently, the AGROVOC is supported by a broad community of experts and institutions, with the coordination and technical support of FAO.
The ASFA secretariat in FAO noted with a certificate of appreciation the activities of the institute as an effective coordinating center in the Russian ASFA network. From 1972 to 2021, the Russian Federation made an invaluable contribution to the database in the form of more than 17 thousand abstracts on water sciences and fisheries.
Thanks to the work carried out by VNIRO, information about the achievements of Russian fisheries science is brought to the world community, including in the field of discoveries of new areas and fishing objects, as well as the priorities of the Russian Federation regarding their study and rational use are postulated.
