Scientists are preparing to conduct research

The VNIRO scientific group on board the TINRO scientific vessel is preparing to conduct research on Pacific salmon. The vessel has already entered the Bering Sea and is on its way to Alaska.

Monday, 14 February 2022 15:17

Start of the expedition

The research vessel TINRO with a team of specialists from VNIRO and its Far Eastern branches left the port in Vladivostok to conduct an expedition within the framework of the International Year of Salmon.

The specialists went to the American port of Dutch Harbor in Alaska, where they are to be joined by fellow scientists from the United States and Canada to conduct comprehensive studies of Pacific salmon in the Aleutian waters.

The scientific expedition will take place in February-April 2022.

Pacific salmon occupy an important place in the structure of the resource base of the countries fishing in the North Pacific Ocean. The least studied period of the life cycle of Pacific salmon is the wintering period, since at this time the salmon are the most distant from the coast, and their various regional groupings are maximally mixed, which, along with severe weather conditions, complicates the process of organizing expedition research.

The expedition  is included in the plan of resource research of the World ocean of the Russian Federation, as well as in the program of the VNIRO "Integrated Salmon Research in the Russian Far East in 2022-2025". In addition, the expedition will be the final project within the framework of the five-year NPAFC initiative "International Year of Salmon" (2018-2022).

A scientific group led by Alexey Somov, a specialist of the Pacific Branch of VNIRO, will study the specifics of the winter ecology of Pacific salmon in almost the entire range of their habitat. Up to five research vessels from Russia, the USA and Canada will be involved in the work..

The scheme of the route and the area of work

The entire voyage will be 78 days. Upon leaving Vladivostok, «TINRO» scientific vessel will proceed to Dutch Harbor to get a part of the scientific group from the USA and Canada and equipment onboard. In total, the survey consists of two stages, lasting 18-20 days. Trawl surveys will be carried out in the open waters of the North Pacific Ocean and within the US EEZ. After completing the scientific program of the expedition, the vessel will reach port in Dutch Harbor, after that it will return to Vladivostok..

On December 20-21, 2021, a meeting of experts from the Atlantic Branch of the VNIRO (AtlantNIRO) and the National Institute of Fisheries Research of Morocco (NIRI) was held in the videoconference format (Kaliningrad – Casablanca – Agadir) to discuss the results of joint research.
