Small-mouth smelt is a valuable commercial species for which a recommended catch volume is established.

Employees of the Volgograd branch of the State Research Center of the Russian Federation "All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography" (VNIRO) are actively involved in the work of the commission for monitoring the stocking of natural reservoirs with artificially bred juveniles.

From June to September, specialists from the Polar Branch of the Russian State Research Center “All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography” (VNIRO) Oleg Goltsev and Evgeny Roshchin conducted research on fishing trawlers.

From October 28 to November 4, as part of the commission of the Nizhneobsk territorial administration for the implementation of state control, supervision, protection of aquatic bioresources and their habitat in the Sverdlovsk and Chelyabinsk regions, specialists from the Ural branch of the Russian State Research Center of Fisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO) took part in stocking 10 water bodies.

The Tsimlyansk Reservoir is one of the most productive reservoirs in the European part of the Russian Federation. In this regard, this reservoir always attracts close attention of fisheries science to the state of aquatic bioresources and their habitat.

Leading researcher of the laboratory of fisheries ecology of the Kamchatka branch of the State Research Center of the Russian Federation "All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography" (VNIRO) Maxim Koval took part in the VIII All-Russian United Meteorological and Hydrological Congress "Air, Water and Sustainable Development", dedicated to the 190th anniversary of the Hydrometeorological Service of Russia. The main goal of the Congress, which was held on October 29-31 in St. Petersburg at the Expoforum site, was to discuss the most pressing problems of meteorological and hydrological science and practice in the context of climate change, to develop recommendations for consolidating the country's existing scientific, technical and industrial potential to solve priority problems in the field of meteorology and climate, hydrology and water management, as well as to develop interaction between scientific communities at the national and international levels. In total, about 130 oral and 50 poster presentations were presented within the framework of 6 thematic sections, 10 round tables were held on various topical issues of hydrology and meteorology.

At the initiative of the Vologda branch of the State Research Center of the Russian Federation "All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography" (VNIRO), since 2014, events on the artificial reproduction of rare and valuable fish species have been held in the region on an ongoing basis using funds from compensation measures for damage caused to aquatic bioresources from economic activities.

The Volgograd Region hosted the 3rd stage of the Russian State Research Center of Fisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO) Amateur Fishing Championship "Fishing for Science", which became the final one in 2024.

The Magadan branch of the Russian State Research Center of Fisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO) is expanding remote studies of approaches and spawning of aquatic biological resources - Pacific salmon, Pacific herring based on unmanned aerial systems (UAS). Until recently, the fleet of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) of the branch was based on foreign-made models, which somewhat limited their use.

Since 1996, October 31 has been celebrated as International Black Sea Day.
